54 BC
Age ~30, near the end of a short life. Catullus moves through the fast, dangerous society of Caesar's Rome — the affair with 'Lesbia', the literary circle of the 'new poets', the feuds and the funerals — and turns it into lyric of unprecedented intimacy and venom in Latin. He is dead by about this year.
